Bro Dyfi Communities First and The Bro Dyfi Community Land Trust (CLT)

6th Nov 2009

Consultations through Bro Ddyfi Communities First have confirmed that one of the most critical problems facing our community is the lack of affordable housing. Communities First has been working on this through a Housing Group that includes Powys County Council and housing providers, and has seen some new social housing built in Bro Ddyfi. Alongside this, we have been supporting an initiative that has the potential to bring about wider community benefits and local control.

The Bro Dyfi Community Land Trust (CLT) was registered by Land for People over a year ago, to provide a legal vehicle that could take on the ownership and development of land and other assets for the long-term benefit of communities in the Dyfi Valley area. This may sound ambitious, but similar initiatives have been successful elsewhere. Since then, we have been waiting for clarity over how and when the land at the old Forestry Commission Depot at Ceinws will be released for its development, in a way that will bring maximum benefits to the local community. The CLT sees this site as its first priority, though other opportunities may exist in the area.

Following a recent meeting with the Welsh Assembly Government, Gwalia Housing, Ecodyfi and other stakeholders, the CLT is much more confident than before that finally, significant progress can be made. This means that the CLT has to become an active entity now. We need to recruit a Board that involves local people and the relevant organisations, with a good mix of skills and experience, that can offer a strong measure of community-led involvement, guidance and control over what promises to be an exciting project.

Andy Rowland from ecodyfi intends to organise an informal meeting for those who are interested in finding out more about this innovative initiative. If you would like an invitation, or would like to talk it over first, please call into Ty Bro Ddyfi at 52 Heol Maengwyn or contact him on 01654 703965 or andy.rowland@ecodyfi.org.uk.

Should you require more information on the Bro Ddyfi Communities First Housing Group, or on the Communities First Programme in the area then please call into the Communities First Office at Yr Hen Siop, Bryn y Gog, Machynlleth, or contact the office on 01654 700315 or Cyril@powys.gov.uk
